Is TransFlow really free?
Yes. Every client feature — page translation, hover, input translate, dictionary, phrasebook, YouTube subtitles, TTS — is free and open source (GPL-3.0). Only the managed cloud has a daily quota, because it costs the project money. If that quota runs out, you need a supported local engine or your own provider key to continue.
Do I need an API key?
No key is needed for basic text translation through the free cloud quota. On-device translation needs compatible hardware and downloaded language packs. Your own Gemini key and local Ollama are optional.
Does it work offline?
It can — with preparation. For local-only translation, disable the cloud engines and use Chrome’s on-device Translator (which needs a supported language pack and hardware) or a local Ollama model. With cloud engines enabled, the private routing mode tries local tiers first but can still fall back to cloud.
How does image translation work?
Reading text from an image needs a vision model: a local Ollama vision model you install, or your own Gemini key. Managed cloud OCR is planned for Pro but is not available yet. Animated GIFs are read frame-aware into a timestamped list.
How do I install TransFlow?
Use the Chrome Web Store button below when available, or install manually from GitHub: clone the repository, open chrome://extensions/, enable Developer mode, and choose Load unpacked. No build step.
What is the difference between Pro and Pro Max?
Pro raises the managed-cloud quota and unlocks preferred models. Pro Max is planned premium capacity for the heaviest use — PDF and manga translation and cross-device sync are roadmap items, not shipping features. If a feature matters to you, check whether it is live before paying.
